Meet Your Technician

My education started with high school shop classes, then to Golden West College for advanced automotive classes.  Over the years,

on-going education has been required to keep up with the changes such as electrical, emissions, computer controls and hundreds of hours spent in Toyota’s certification program. I have spent over 35 years in the   automotive field. I’ve worked in major dealerships as a technician as well as running my own business. I also have experience in teaching as an assistant at Mt. Hood and Chemeketa college’s automotive programs in Oregon. I have also mentored students in several shops and tutored others on my own.

What does it mean to be Toyota Certified?

Each vehicle manufacturer has their own “Factory Training.” When a dealer hires a competent technician, they evaluate their skills and  send them to the factory schools to make them that much better. Toyota’s Technical education consists of 12 different classes which overlap the ASE areas.  It takes years to complete all the classes. There are also frequent on-line courses administered by Toyota on all new car models and in new technology that are required to keep one’s certification current. In addition to the classes, the certification will require a minimum length of years of experience on that specific make of vehicle. To be a Toyota Master, a technician needs 5 years work experience at a Toyota Dealership and be an ASE Master Tech.

Apple Automotive owner David King:

*Has over 40 years experience in the craft

*Has been a re-certified  ASE Master Technician since the 80’s,

*Toyota Pro Certified

*Hyundai Certified

*A variety of other certifications and technical classes..

Question: Why am I not specializing in Toyota?

This was my first choice. However, I realized I would only be doing oil changes and service work. Toyotas just don’t break down that much. That is why my main vehicle is a Toyota!

Subaru is a great vehicle and a superior all-wheel-drive system but has some engineering issues on their engines. I have solved all the issues but will not say how on this website. I enjoy re-doing other shops head gasket repairs when they follow the Subaru repair manual.

I do own Subarus, currently 3. I usually have one for sale!

What does it mean to be ASE Certified?

ASE's  (Automotive Service Excellence) Mission is to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service through the testing and certification of repair and service professionals. About 420,000 professionals hold current ASE credentials.

Establishing a good relationship with a repair shop you can trust provides peace of mind throughout the life of your car. It's a proven fact that motorists who build such a relationship, along with learning more about proper maintenance, typically enjoy a more satisfactory vehicle repair experience.

Certification Benefits Motorists
ASE certifies the technical competence of individual technicians, not repair facilities. Prior to taking ASE certification tests, many technicians attend training classes or study on their own in order to brush up on their knowledge. By passing difficult, national tests, ASE-certified technicians prove their technical competence to themselves, to their employers, and to their customers. Moreover, shop owners and managers who encourage their employees to become certified can be counted on to be concerned about the other aspects of their business.

How Certification Works
Technicians who pass at least one exam and fulfill the two-year work experience requirement become ASE-certified. Those who pass a battery of exams (and fulfill the experience requirement) earn Master Technician status.

There are specialty exams covering all major areas of repair. There are nine tests for auto technicians alone:

*Engine Repair

*Engine Performance

*Electrical/Electronic System

*Heating and Air Conditioning

*Suspension and Steering

*Manual Drive Train and Axles

*Automatic Transmissions

Caveat: As of 2012 I let all of my certifications expire. ASE keeps adding more and more tests and the time and cost to keep them current does not pencil out anymore. If you are good at multiple choice tests with a little study, an individual can pass all the written tests and be deemed a “Master.” I have met young “masters” that had no idea how to work on a car.

On Contentment:

But godliness with contentment is great gain.  For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.

I try to live this principle from 1 Timothy 6 as a guide for pricing my services.
